How long does an MOT take?
An MOT test usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. If the car needs repairs to pass, allow longer: anything required is explained and quoted before work starts, and most common repairs can be done the same day.
What happens during the test
A DVSA-approved tester inspects the car against the MOT standards. It is a check of safety and emissions at the time of the test, not of the engine, clutch or gearbox's general condition.
Main items checked
- Lights, indicators and horn
- Brakes and their efficiency
- Tyres and wheels
- Steering and suspension
- Seatbelts and seats
- Windscreen, wipers and washers
- Exhaust and emissions
- Body structure, for excessive corrosion or sharp edges
If the car fails
You get a list of the faults, graded dangerous, major or minor, plus any advisories. Faults are explained and quoted before any work is done, and the car can then be retested.
Booking a waiting MOT
Waiting appointments are available at Totnes Cross, so you can stay in our waiting area while the test is carried out. You can have the MOT done up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date.
Common questions
- Can I drive my car after it fails its MOT?
- Only if the old MOT certificate is still valid and no dangerous faults were found. With a dangerous fault, the car cannot be driven until it is repaired.
- What is an MOT advisory?
- An advisory is something the tester noticed that is not a fail yet but may need attention soon, such as tyres close to the legal limit. It is worth getting advisories checked before they become failures.
