Do I need ADAS calibration after a windscreen replacement?
Usually, yes. If your car has a camera mounted on the windscreen for lane keeping, emergency braking or sign recognition, manufacturers specify recalibration after the screen is replaced, so the camera reads the road from exactly the right angle.
Why a new windscreen affects the camera
The camera behind the mirror is aimed through the glass at a precise angle. A new screen, or a bracket that sits fractionally differently, can shift that aim. A small error at the camera becomes a large one tens of metres down the road.
Systems that can be affected
- Lane keep assist and lane departure warning
- Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
- Adaptive cruise control
- Road sign recognition
- Forward collision warning
Other jobs that call for calibration
- Wheel alignment adjustments
- Suspension or steering repairs
- Front or rear bumper repairs
- Accident damage repairs
Calibration is recommended alongside a four-wheel alignment, so the steering geometry and the driver-assistance systems agree with each other and with the manufacturer's specification.
